Bringing us together
University
If elected, I will sit on the Governing Authority and other university committees, and I will fight for issues of importance to students.
• Free Legal Advice Centre in Maynooth
I will set up a Free Legal Advice Centre for students, involving the Law
department and Law students. Similar groups operate in other colleges in
Ireland so it is important Maynooth students can avail of this service
too.
Green campaigns
This year I’ve worked on getting a Union green working group up and running. This is an issue that a lot of students are passionate about, so I think it’s worthwhile continuing. I fully support the movement to get a Green Flag for our campus. To make this happen I will run campaigns such as Green Week, as well as helping the university raise awareness about car-pooling
• More solar panels
I plan to lobby for more university buildings to be fitted with solar
panels. There are lots of grants available to cover some of the costs of
this, and the Callan Building already has panels.
• Cycling
I will encourage students to cycle to college, lobby for more cycle
lanes and covered bike storage areas, and negotiate with local bike
shops to get a student discount to get more students cycling.
Campus Development
• Social Space For Students
The common room is always full, and students need space to hang out
between classes. I will lobby for the canteen to be finished quickly. I
will also get more comfortable places to sit around campus, and will
once and for all get rid of the blue chairs in the Arts Block
• North Campus
I will lobby for student friendly pricing and a laser card facility in
the new canteen. I will also make sure more notice boards go up around
campus and will explore the idea of electronic notice boards.
• South Campus
Provide a café for students on the south campus.
• Microwave For Commuters
I will get access to a microwave so students can bring in their own
lunch. I will lobby the new canteen to provide this for students who buy
drinks.
Module Reviews
I will lobby the Academic Council to have peer reviewed module surveys and publish findings.
Staffing issues
The recruitment freeze is having a very negative effect on the university. I will lobby for its removal or for the university to find ways around it to provide services that students need.
• Counselling
We need more staff in the counselling service. They provide a
crucial service and having long waiting times isn't acceptable. •
Medical Centre The Medical Center needs either a full time doctor, or
another part time doctor.
• Academic Advisory Office
The staff in the Academic Advisory Office is doing a great job,
but it's not acceptable that the office of Academic Advisor isn't
filled. I will lobby for this to be filled as a matter of urgency.
