The new minds machine (bi polar) is built. The machine is working (as far as we can tell). It's a dual processor machine (ATHLON MP) with HardWare Raid management for 2 x 160 gigabyte disks (Steve). It has a one gig of ram, and in general is quite a savage machine. Total costs for the box was 1550, slightly over budget(50 quid), thanks to Komplett refusing to refund unused ram. (They gave us back 75% of the price).
The following peoples are responsible for the selection, purchase and building of this new machine:
Phil has “hardware fu”, he has proved this on several occasions, the creation of this box being one of them. Phil picked out the pieces, checked for compatibility with each other, and the operating system (FreeBSD). Phil then built the machine. Most importantly Phil saved us 200 quid or thereabouts by buying XP (single processor) chips, and turning them in MP chips.
Des was charged with the business end of things, i.e. buying, bargaining, pleading, ringing, and delivering all the hardware to its current home in the hardware lab.
Vish aided Phil in construction, and took over Des's job while he went to Prague to witness a hand grenade attack.
The new box is currently awaiting setup by the admins (will + niall)
