How to setup PhpBB on MiNDS

Introduction

The aim of this guide is to help users to setup their own PhpBB bulletin board/forum. An example of a phpBB installation can be found on Buffy's website. Check out the phpBB website for the latest version of the software. Just change the version numbers in the commands below to correspond with the version you are installing. Please also be aware that you are responsible for the content on your bulletin board, so make sure it complies with the terms of service for Minds.

Before you begin

Before you begin you will need to sort out a few things. You must already have the following:

To signup for a Minds account, just find a member of the committee. To get a MySQL database, contact the MiNDS president, Vishal Vatsa (vishal@cs.may.ie).

Step 1: Downloading PhpBB

Log into MiNDS and type the following commands.

You have now downloaded phpBB sucessfully.

Step 2: Setting up PhpBB

Now using your web brower log into your PhpBB web forum e.b. http://www.minds.nuim.ie/~yourusername/phpBB2/install/install.php where yourusername should be replaced with your username. Your database name should be phpbb, your database username should be your Minds username, and your database password is the one Vishal gave you when he setup your MySQL database. You will need to setup an administrator username and password so that you can use the forum. Press Install.

Step 3: Post-setup

Log into Minds and type the following:

Now go to your web browser and go to http://www.minds.nuim.ie/~yourusername/phpBB2/ and log in with the administrator username and password you selected earlier. Click on the Go to Administration Panel at the bottom of the page to setup your fora.
