This page provides details of all Minds related events, past and future. As can be seen below Minds regularily holds interesting talks on various aspects of Computer Science, as well as tutorials and gaming events.

Minds LAN #3, 11th & 12th December, Codename: Satan-Santa:Source

The Lans are proving extremely popular this year, and as such we are having our third one. There is a slightly special venue for this one, we have organised 2 tutorial rooms which are connected by a door. This should make team play games very good. The games we expect to play are CounterStrike:Source, Battlefield 1942(all versions), Quake 3, original Counterstrike, and as usual the occasional rogue entry.

As per usual, pizza, pubs and profanities are expected.

The Minds IT society and NUIM Biology Society present:"Cybernetics, a discussion"

Minds, in conjunction with the Biology Society have brought internationally acclaimed scientist Kevin Warwick (Professor of Cybernetics,University of Reading) over to participate in a panel discussion on Cybernetics.

Joining him on the panel will be Ronan Reilly (Professor of Computer Science, Maynooth), and Martin Downes (Professor of Biology, Maynooth)

This will be a large event , and much organisation has gone in to making it possible. We implore everyone to attend, this is one that can't be missed. Any questions regarding this event should be directed to vishal@cs.may.ie

Minds LAN #2, 6th & 7th November, Codename: Zombie-Twist

Following from the success of the first gaming event, we are following up quickly with a second. Popular Games at the previous event were StarWars: BattleFront, Battlefield 1942, Counterstrike, Dawn of War and others.

As per usual, pizza and pubs are expected.

Phil Brennan: Source Control using CVS, Theory and Practice

This is the first is what is intended to be a series of talks on project management for students. Source Control is a standard industry practice, and graduates who are unfamiliar with it will suffer as they venture into the real world.

Phil Brennan is a highly qualified system administrator and has experience using several different source control packages. Phil has used CVS for several years, and will be introducing it to the students in a hands-on practical fashion. The slides from this talk are availabe online in pdf form and in openoffice form(.sxi).

Minds AGM October 6th 2004

Minds will be holding its AGM this Wendnesday at 6pm. All minds members are encouraged to attend. We will be having free drink + pizza after the meeting. This year there are a number of committee places going, all are encouraged to come along.

For those who are unsure of the location, the Conference Room is located in the Computer Science end of the Callan building, in the corridor leading to Lab 1. It is opposite the Tutorial Room.

Minds LAN 2nd & 3rd of October, Codename: Freakathon

Minds will be holding one of our regular Lan parties during the first weekend of October. For those not familiar LANs are basically chances for everyone to connect their computers together and play massive multiplayer games (for example CounterStrike, Doom3, BattleField 1942 and others).

These events are always well attended, and attendees receieve free Pizza and other Refreshments. The event is typically held in a room in the arts block in NUI Maynooth. We usually visit a pub or two both nights.

There is no charge to attend, just come along, bring a computer if you have one and enjoy!
